The town of Orvieto, in the Umbrian region, sits on the top of volcanic rock. The drive to this ancient religious city is surrounded by vineyards that produce the famous Orvieto Classico wine. The medieval Duomo (Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta) stands at the heart of the town dominating the entire Orvieto so that the front facade can be seen from a great distance. The construction of this Gothic cathedral, which took three centuries to be completed, began in the 13th century when Pope Nicholas IV laid the first cornerstone. Below the main city is a specular underground city, the result of excavations that lasted 2500 years. The underground city can be visited through guided tours. To not be missed is the well of St. Patrick, an incredible engineering work, designed by Antonio Da Sangallo in 1257.
