Cortona, in the province of Arezzo, is an important cultural and tourist center of the valley Valdichiana. Cortona was a Fortified town founded by the Umbrians almost 3000 years ago and was one of the 12 Lucumonies – a sort of Etruscan federation. The city dominates the entire Valdichiana valley at the hight of 600 meters. Cortona commands fascinating views over the waters of Lake Trasimeno and high peaks of Mount Amiata. On the highest point of the city, you can find the sanctuary of Santa Margherita, Patroness of the city, and the Fortress of Girifalco. In the city center alongside with Palazzo Comunale and Piazza Della Repubblica, you can find small shops with handicraft products and local gastronomy. The area is known for its wine production of Cortona Syrah DOC and Chianina breeding – one of the oldest Italian cattle breeds of high quality. Just outside the walls of the city is situated the first Convent built by San Francesco (Franciscan Hermitage Le Celle) dating back to 1211 and still inhabited by a small community of friars.
